St. Peter’s Church

St Peter’s Church is the oldest surviving building in Haveringland and it has one of the oldest round towers in the county, dating to the 11th century. The rest of the church, including the top of the tower, is a rebuild of 1858, consisting of an aisled nave, chancel and big north and south transepts. The interior is mostly 19th century too, but there is a 15th century font.

The Church was originally set amongst the wooded parkland of the Haveringland Hall estate. Haveringland Hall was located about half a mile to the north east. During World War Two the hall and its estate were requisitioned and became part of RAF Swannington airfield. The trees surrounding the church were removed. One of airfield perimeter tracks ran alongside the church. Now standing isolated beside this track, St. Peter’s is known as ‘The Church in the Fields’.

The Church setting and churchyard are of natural and historic interest due to the location and associations with Haveringland Hall and RAF Swannington.

The church is a Festival Church, with about six services each year, plus other events celebrating its place at the heart of the community.
