Swannington Airfield post war


Tentative plans to retain and upgrade the airfield for post-war RAF operational fighter use came to nothing and the entire site was sold in lots. Today the former airfield is mostly on private land and much is used for agriculture.

The Haveringland Hall estate was sold in lots which included the sale of Hall Farm and also the site of the former Haveringland Hall, its the gardens, arboretum, coach house and clock tower.

In the late 1940s cars were built in the Duncan Factory in a former aircraft hangar at RAF Swannington – and this was where the Duncan Dragonfly was invented.

Did you know that, in 1959 the former Swannington Airfield was used to demonstrate possible agricultural uses for the innovative “Hummingbird” or jet helicopter? You can watch a short film about the trial below. Look out for local landmarks during the flight.
