The RAF began building this airfield in 1942. Many new structures were built across the formerly agricultural estate. Haveringland Hall, a rather grand mansion, was requisitioned as the Officer’s mess. RAF Swannington was officially opened on 1 April 1944. It was amongst the last of the World War Two airfields to be built.
At the peak of operations, some 1400 RAF personnel were based here. Part of the RAF 100 Group, a number of squadrons were based at RAF Swannington.

Swannington airfield is now mostly ploughed up, although portions of runway, perimeter tracks and some buildings remain. If you visit St. Peter’s Church you will walk or drive along a former perimeter track and possibly park on a former aircraft parking area. There are also a number of memorials to RAF Swannington.
